I recently took a walk/hike through finished portions of the Fonta Flora State Trail in Burke County, North Carolina. The trail is named after the local Fonta Flora settlement of African-American sharecroppers whose homes were flooded when the Catawba River was dammed to create Lake James. I started the walk from Linville Access Area and walked 1.5 miles on the trail. This part of the path is a 20-mile loop around Lake James. When completed, the Fonta Flora Trail will feature hiking and biking routes at approximately 100 miles long. Authorized in 2015, the path will connect Morganton to Asheville. It will also traverse Lake James State Park (part of Pisgah National Forest) and Fonta Flora County Park and adjoin the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. The feather icon is inspired by America’s national bird, the bald eagle, and is incorporated along the state trail and trailheads, particularly in Burke County.
