Artist statement:
September 27th, 2024, is a date that everyone in Western North Carolina has imprinted on their hearts forever. The helplessness we all felt during Hurricane Helene is depicted within the portrait of my Mamaw Clare, one of the toughest women alive. As the creek got higher and higher, we couldn’t do anything but watch. My goal with this painting was to express the collective heartbreak felt within my community, hopefully giving the viewer a face to statistics they may have read.
